Microchipped – But Not Registered? Your Pet Is Still at Risk

Updated: May 13

At the Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter, we have recently found several stray animals with microchips implanted — but unfortunately, their microchips were not registered on any database.

A microchip only works if the details are linked to your name and contact number on a registered database. If the chip is not registered, or your contact details are outdated, we have no way of tracing you when your pet is found.

Why registration matters :

  •  It proves ownership

  •  It allows shelters and vets to contact you immediately

  •  It helps reunite lost pets with their families quickly

  •  It reduces the time your pet spends in a shelter

Important reminders :

* After your pet is microchipped, confirm that it has been registered.

* Ask your vet which database was used.

* Make sure your phone number and address are correct.

* Update your details if you move or change numbers.

A microchip without registration is like having an ID book with no name inside.

If you are unsure whether your pet’s microchip is registered, please contact your local veterinarian or microchip company to verify the details.

Let’s work together to keep pets safe and get them home faster.
