ABOUT US
We are an independent Non-profit Organization (NPO) that was founded in 2010 by a group of individuals who were concerned about the well-being of the animals in Orkney, as there was no SPCA.
In January 2020 the SPCA in Klerksdorp closed due to the lack of funds and aid from the local municipality and community.
The NSPCA approached us to take over the property and their responsibilities and the Municipal pound duties in the KOSH area. We relocated from our AngloGold premises next to West Vaal Hospital, Orkney to the old SPCA premises in Uraniaville, Klerksdorp.
OUR MISSION
Our main objective is to rehabilitate and rehome as many of the unwanted and homeless cats and dogs as we can. Our policy is that all our animals are sterilised / castrated before being rehomed, as we are opposed to breeding. We would like to lessen homeless in the animal population within our area.
Another aim of ours is to have the public know how to care for animals which in turn will decline animal cruelty and abuse.

MEET THE TEAM
FOUNDER / PUBLIC RELATIONS
CHARMAINE PARKER
Charmaine Parker is the founder of the Orkney Animal Shelter and has dedicated more than 40 years of her life to animal welfare. Seeing the need for animal protection in the Orkney community at a time when there was no SPCA in the area, she started the shelter with only R150 and a dream to help animals in need.
Through her passion, determination, and tireless commitment, Charmaine helped build the shelter into a place of safety and hope for countless animals over the years.
Although she has stepped away from the shelter’s daily operations, she continues to play an important role in Public Relations for the shelter and proudly serves on the shelter’s board. Her dedication and love for animals remain at the heart of the shelter’s mission today.
LINDA TIETZ
Linda started her journey at the Orkney Animal Shelter as a volunteer, driven by her love for animals and passion for helping the community.
Over time, her dedication and commitment led her into running the shelter’s front office and reception area, where she plays an important role in the shelter’s daily operations.
Together with Yulanda, Linda is often the first friendly face visitors see when arriving at the shelter. She assists with the day-to-day administration, supports members of the public, and helps ensure the shelter runs smoothly and welcomingly for both people and animals alike.

TRAINING INSPECTOR
GERT JOHNSTONE
Gert joined our team as a Trainee Inspector with a passion for animal welfare and a willingness to learn and serve the community.
He works alongside our inspectors in responding to complaints, assisting animals in need, and supporting the daily operations of the shelter.
Through dedication, compassion, and hard work, Gert continues to grow within the organisation while helping make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals every day.
YULANDA HAVENGA
SECRETARY
Yulanda has been part of the shelter family since 2018. Starting out as a volunteer, her dedication and passion for animal welfare quickly made her an important part of the team.
When the shelter moved to the new premises in 2020, she went on to become the shelter’s Secretary.
As Linda’s right-hand woman, Yulanda works tirelessly to assist the public, receive complaints, and manage the adoption process. She is also often the first friendly face visitors see when arriving at the shelter.
GERHARD DURANT
INSPECTOR
Gerhard Durant is one of our dedicated Inspectors at the shelter. Alongside Gert, he assists with after-hours emergencies and is always ready to help members of the public when urgent animal welfare situations arise.
His commitment and willingness to respond when needed most play an important role in ensuring animals receive assistance and protection at all hours.
DIANE JACOBS
OPERATIONS MANAGER / INSPECTOR
Diane has been part of the shelter for over a decade, beginning her journey as a volunteer driven by a passion for helping animals in need. Through years of dedication and hands-on experience, she became an important part of the shelter’s daily operations and welfare work.
Her role includes overseeing shelter operations, responding to cruelty complaints, conducting inspections, assisting with rescues, and helping ensure animals receive the care and protection they deserve.
Diane is passionate about animal welfare and believes every animal deserves compassion, safety, and a second chance at life.
BENNIE DE LANGE
BACK OF HOUSE SUPERVISOR
Bennie de Lange joined the shelter in 2018 as a Kennel Assistant, where his passion for animal welfare and strong work ethic quickly became evident.
Through dedication, hands-on experience, and a willingness to help wherever needed, he later progressed into the role of Inspector, assisting with animal welfare complaints, rescues, and field work within the community.
Over the years, Bennie has become an important part of the shelter family and has gained extensive knowledge of both animal care and shelter operations. While he has since stepped away from the Inspector role, he now serves as our Back of House Supervisor, overseeing the daily running of the kennel areas and ensuring that the animals in our care receive the attention and support they need behind the scenes.
His commitment, experience, and continued dedication play a vital role in the smooth operation of the shelter every day.
